Desiderius Erasmus (146x-1536) was a priest, theologian, humanist, professor and writer. In his books he usually gave his opinion on society and often criticised the ideas of the Catholic Church, although he never definitely turned his back on it. Thanks to the invention of printing, his ideas easily spread throughout Europe.
